Tae: To strike with foot
Kwon: To strike with hand
Do: The Way
TaeKwonDo: The way of striking with foot and striking with hand.
Modern Taekwondo traces its roots back to the original Korean Karate system known as "Tae Kyun," meaning "The art of systematically kicking and punching with the bare feet and hands."
Archeologists have discovered murals and carvings of men practicing Tae Kyun that were dated as far back as 37 B.C. The techniques in these ancient murals are the same techniques still being practiced in modern day Taekwondo. Taekwondo is a time tested martial art that utilizes striking and kicking to defend oneself from an enemy. It has evolved into one of the most popular martial arts in the world, rich in tradition and customs.
Our form of Taekwondo places emphasis on Taekwondo as a system of self defense. The teaching methodology we use compartmentalizes the curriculum into individual lessons that focus on one aspect or skill set. This allows the student to leave each training session with a deeper understanding and a higher level of proficiency in that particular skill or technique. While we stay true to the customs and traditions of this ancient fighting system, our priority is always on our students having the confidence and skills necessary to protect themselves and their loved ones.
